It’s not often that Regiment Sound gets the chance to feature local bands in the Pittsburgh area. A surf punk band is also probably not your first thought when you think of music in Pittsburgh, Pa. This past week I was able to learn more about Surf Bored, the music child of Ryan Hartman, a fellow student at the University of Pittsburgh.
Surf Bored is a lo-fi, garage punk band with sounds similar to that of Wavves and The Orwells. This past Saturday, Surf Bored released its first full length album, Sweet Dreams on cassette and digitally via bandcamp. The nine-track album features songs about growing up and growing apart as Hartman explores his feelings of being an adult exiting adolescence. On the album we hear a combination of high energy, repetitious sounds paired with pure and simplistic tunes that reflect the surf punk beach vibe.
The album opens with the first single, “Black and Blue”. In this first song we listen to an energized, beach-like anthem created with steady drums and provocative choruses. The song hits a sentimental note when Hartman sings a tale of loose heartbreak, “I’m so black and blue and I’m still stuck on you”, and then rises back into the melodious chorus of “ooh’s”.
“Taco Bell” is another notable sing-a-long song off the album. The guitar-powered, surf punk track hits another note of adolescence as Hartman coos “its seems like I’m on my own, whatever I don’t care at all”. Other tracks on the album such as “Cats” and “Sam” continue to seek teenage comfort of the past, while tracks like “White Kelly” explore the harsh reality of things out of your own control. The album ends with the track “I Believe in Ghosts”, a mid-tempo love song about a dream girl who leaves Hartman questioning life.
Sweet Dreams has been released on the label Crafted Sounds, owned by Connor Murray who I owe a huge thank you to for contacting me and introducing me to Surf Bored’s music.
Have a listen to Surf Bored yourself and follow Ryan on Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram for more information about upcoming shows and his music. Surf Bored will be performing live on October 14 at Penn State University and possibly in November at Cattivo in Pittsburgh, Pa.
